Oyster Mushrooms will grow on just about any substrate. The ideal substrate is one that is relatively species-specific. In other words, one that mushrooms will grow on and other organisms will not. The typical substrates are Straw (ideal), hardwood sawdust and paper or cardboard, or some combination of these. If you have an option, Straw is the best. For details on growing oysters, we highly recommend Paul Stamets' books The Mushroom Cultivator and Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms. They are available in libraries and bookstores everywhere.
